Oh no, I _did_ load it, but there are some odd issue with the module
itself.

I have nearly everything not required to boot as a module, and as I said
I do not use the parallel port lately. I only asked if any other module
like ppdev or parport was needed to correctly use short.o

I'll explain. I could load the modules with that script, and the module
showed up on the list of modules loaded. Then I tried to load it
directly (insmod) and it failed since it had been compiled for a 2.4.2
kernel. Thus I compiled it myself. I made the required changes to the
Makefile, and also had to modify two lines in short.c due to some define
clash with the newer kernels - remember I am using 2.4.20-pre8-ac3 right
now -.
Once I did that, I got my new module which I could insmod without
problems. I even copied it to my /lib/modules dir, and added a couple
lines to modules.conf so that it was loaded automatically by devfsd.
However I remember having lots of troubles to first get working an old
pic programmer which was connected to the parallel port. As it is
common too with other kind of flash programmers, namely the GameBoy ones
(I friend of mine has one of those). There are issues with the mode your
parport is configured, and even with the settings in the BIOS (IRQ 5/7,
ECP, EPP, ECP+EPP & DMA on the EPP ones).
Just to be sure it was not a software problem I asked what settings are
the recommended, or in the lack of specifics, what you are using on your
machines.
Damn, if there's any chance of making it work with a 2.4.2 kernel I'll
grab the sources and compile one just to reprogram the Jornada. I really
want see it working again, try Qtopia on it and besides using mutt, vim
et all, program a few things I have on mind :)
Right now I envy those with a Sharp Zaurus, even if I like the Jornada
hardware better.
I'd send it to you, but considering the _long_ trip I wanna exhaust any
other option I can get locally.
