re-installing

   My last install of intimate didn't fully work, but now when I try
to do a reinstall, it doesn't start the install. Do I have to really
delete everything on that partition first?
That is, can't I install over what's already there so I don't lose
everything else I've added. It works, more or less, but only from the
serial console. Although I get xwindows, and even installed rxvt and a
virtual keyboard, the two don't talk to each other, so there's no way
to issue any commands via the screen, only the serial console.
