weird boot failure

I've been running intimate for some time with no real problems,
then the other day I accidently unseated my double sleeve -- crashing
intimate, of course, since it's on the 512meg cf card there. But
trying to reboot I found the boot stops at the "starting up -
Detecting PCMCIA Cards..." screen.
Thinking the partition had gotten corrupted from the sudden
unplugging, even tho it is ext3, I put the card in my desktop reader,
and could read it fine. So then I tried running familiar, and yes, I
can fdisk the card, can run fsck on it with no reported problems, can
mount it and read it --- but intimate won't boot.
