Yeah, I've looked at this too.

What would be needed is something like xdm, but with a keyboard like
the one in GPE on familiar. In familiar, I think this is in the gpe-dm
package, but I guess this isn't packaged for intimate. (I haven't
really looked hard, but as it's not installed by default this is my
guess.)

It might also be possible to run xdm and tell it to launch an xkbd
while on its startup screen. I know it is possible to customize the
startup screen, as some computers I used ran xsnow in the background on
the login screen.
