The problem is most likely that you're using modprobe instead of insmod
- the latter doesn't need the modules.dep file, but it means you have to
take care of the dependencies.
I would think it would be possible to pretty easily alter our initrd
such that it can boot familiar from a hard disk, without having to
remake too much of the initrd, beyond putting a the kernel image and
modules from familiar (and, if you want it, a modules.dep).
