This sounds like it doesn't find your nameserver. Have you checked
/etc/resolv.conf, to see that it is set up correctly?
As to the X problems, most of the commands in /etc/init.d/x are not
essential. I've attached my modified /etc/init.d/x that works well
for me. It gives a couple of error messages about /etc/X11/Xresources
and company that don't exist, but it still works ok.
