OK, so I gritted my teeth and rebooted, and it came up in X,
but no window manager, no windowing system.
Luckily I have just bought a serial cable, so I was able to
log in via minicom. Which puts me more or less where you
(Gael) had placed me, I guess.
Did 'dpkg --reconfigure -a' like you suggested, and that
came back without error. However, it didn't help. I have X
without window manager.
I did go into /etc/init.d/x and see a discrepancy like the
one you describe, but it had 'blackbox', not 'fluxbox'.
Regardless, which blackbox and which fluxbox both indicated
they are not available, so I changed it to 'matchbox&', and
restarted X with '/etc/init.d/x stop' followed by
'/etc/init.d/x start'. That didn't work, so I tried
'shutdown -r now' and got the same thing. Thinking that
/etc/init.d/x might not have a proper PATH, I tried being
explicit ( /usr/bin/matchbox & ), but that doesn't work
either.
I don't think your advice re linuxrc is relevant since 'ps
-ef' shows Xfbdev and matchbox running (and I could log in,
so getty got started) so presumably it did the normal init
and got to runlevel 2.
At this point I'm kind of stuck again. I can't log in
without serial, and serial plugs in where my networking
would plug in.
I thought about trying to launch an xterm or xclock from the
commandline, but I don't seem to have xauth or xhosts
available. I suppose I can unplug the drive and stick it in
the laptop and put some debs on it and see if I can get
blackbox installed. Or is there someway to troubleshoot
fluxbox? /var/log/* is particularly sparse.
