"New" install instructions Toshiba 5Gb. pcmcia drive

Hello;

          I tried to install Intimate to a toshiba 5Gb pcmcia drive
using the instructions in NEWS.
It finds the image on the msdos partition (tried it with 10Mb and 2G)
and exits with Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root filesystem on
device 01:00. I followed the instructions and am not a new user. I did
want to leave pocketpc on the flash disk until I can port some maps to
linux. I would appreciate any help in this matter.
