Could you please be a little more verbose about what ipaq modell you
have, etc?

Have you verified your root image using md5sum? Have you tried
re-loading your root image? Have you tried an alternate root image? "No
proper device" for microdrive sounds like a hardware or kernel issue to
me, but are you sure you haven't just forgotten to install the ext3
kernel modules?
