Chris,
Hi. I have to copy your note from the archive and
reply with webmail, I am on the road.
BTW, a quick note on my setup. I have 36xx, CF sleeve
with IBM uDrive, USB crade, and Serial Sync Cable. I
do all my downloads to the iPAQ over usbnet, and use
iptables on my desktop machine to forward a
cable-modem connection to the iPAQ.
> an sshd in the initrd is probably quite handy.
I think it is essential. How else would you get a
shell to the ipaq in order to give commands to it
(that is, if you don't have a keyboard)?. At a
minimum, you have to run the command
"intimate-install" after booting to the initrd. As for
me, I had to ifconfig my usbf interface (since I don't
have DHCP server on my desktop) and make it default
route in order to get the iPAQ on the net before I
could even begin the dbootstrap.
>"apt-get install ssh" would have been better really
How would I do that?
First, I configure my usbnet while plugged into serial
cable using minicom. Next, unplugging the serial
connect cable and putting the iPAQ in the USB cradle.
At that point, usbnet is connected but there is no way
to shell to the iPAQ to give any commands. That's why
I had to handpick the sshd parts for the initrd before
I could get the dbootstrab started over usbnet.
Anyway, after having setup a usable initrd and getting
through the dbootstrab, I rebooted the iPAQ. Once
again, I had to cherry pick the sshd parts from Fam-6
in /dev/flash, before I could get back on the net.
Maybe, after completing dbootstrap, I could have ran
the "apt-get install sshd" to install sshd to the new
/dev/hda2 partition before rebooting out of the
initrd?
>one thing it would have set up the various init.d

Well, now that I can get on the net with USB, perhaps
I will try the 'apt-get sshd', perhaps it will make my
pppd problem go away.
>I've never used pppd over the serial link before -
>what infamous error?
Google search "pppd silent looped back" will show
several relevant bits, including several iPAQ
specific.
Anyway, one suggestion was putting "silent" in iPAQ
ppp options. I have never had to use that option on
iPAQ ppp options before. I still need to research this
one a bit more; as I said above, I may have something
screwy in my hand-installed sshd.
One additional suggestion for the install procedure is
to make reference to the debian ARM install
instructions on debian.org.
I found that I needed to pick up at Section 8.3
"Post-Base", once I completed Section 3 of the new
Intimate/iPAQ howto ("as far as this document is
concerned, you are on your own") ;-)
Sorry for the "dissertation" just trying to be
precise!
later,
-GN
