I suppose that an sshd in the initrd is probably quite handy. I think it
would be bad to let the initrd grow too much, but an sshd isn't going to
make a huge difference.

The dhcp question is a tricky one - it really makes life so much easier
with an iPAQ if you do run a dhcp server somewhere on your network. In
the fullness of time, I'll put an appendix into the howto that covers
setting up a really simple dhcp server.
In the mean time, I'll look at the USB networking and see what I can do
to improve it's setup.

"apt-get install ssh" would have been better really at that point, for
one thing it would have set up the various init.d scripts properly.
