comments on new install procedure

Hello,
I am glad to see the development of an Intimate install scheme that
tries to take advantage of bootldr capability to boot from the vfat
partition (as opposed to requiring support of flash device).
I saw previous comments about lack of sshd. I will corroborate those
observations: I had to reconstruct the initrd with the various sshd bits
and other dependancies from Familiar V6. However, I was pleasantly
surprised to find the the usbnet subsystem was entirely functional, with
the exception of having to manually set the ifconfg usbf by hand through
minicom before I could login with sshd. I would suggest including a
default static configuration for usbf in /etc/network/interfaces (such
as 192.168.0.202); I'd say most people won't be running a dhcp service
on their workstation machine and will need a static setting for usbf.

Happily, the install went by seemingly without a hitch. WHen finished
with install, X was running (though I did have to fix the link to the
windowmanager.). However, I had to again install sshd on the root drive
installation (fortunately, Intimate mounts the flash by default so it
was a simple matter to coppy the sshd bits over from Familiar 6
install). Again I had to set the /etc/network/interfaces for usbnet.

The final nag of this arrangement is that pppd does not work. I can get
pppd to work, but when I set the sshd to start (from /etc/rc2.d), then
pppd will break (infamous "serial line looped back error").

My arrangement of /etc/rc2.d is as follows:
S14ppp S20makedev S20swapd S89atd S99rmnologin
S20inetd S20sshd S20usbnet S89cron S99x

Note that I had to manually link in the S20usbnet and S20sshd, they are
not inherently part of the current base Intimate/Debian install.

Usbnet is working fine now, as is sshd (only pppd seems broken).

I am a longtime "ipaq-linux hacker" but new to Debian. Fairly stumped on
this issue for now. Hope this is useful info for bettering the distribution.

regards,
