I'll come back and reply to the rest of this tomorrow (about to go to
bed :) - to stop it mounting the flash automatically, in /etc/fstab,
change the line:

/dev/mtdblock/1 /mnt/flash jffs2 defaults 0 0

so that the "defaults" is replaced with "defaults,noauto"

(that will be the new default behaviour as of the next initrd release)
