intimate booting problem: setting up device nodes

A quick search at handhelds and I found somebody having the same problem
(posted in Jan 2002) as I just encountered ... I couldn't find a fix
though. Anybody has a suggestion on how to make it work. FYI I am booting
from Toshiba pcmcia eide drive.
