Is there a way to "boot ide" by default?

Okay, I'm no kernel hacker, but here are my major
desires/concerns re the intimate distribution.

First of all, let me say that the inability to suspend
the ipaq while running a ide_cs root has discouraged
many I know from actively running the intimate
distribution.

So, I'm wondering several things:
Is there a way to get the bootloader to "boot ide" or
other direct booting from microdrive at the bootloader
method without a serial console?

Also, when I "boot ide", I still can't come back from
suspend without linux having problems restoring
communication with the microdrive. Is there a way
built into the ide modules that allows the root to be
suspended? Or is the problem in the ide (or ide_cs)
modules themselves?

How about putting in flash the minimal system for
unsuspending and getting the microdrive back up as
root? Would this require just modification of apmd
(or apm kernel code) or also modification of other
stuff?

Ok, I ask too many questions.
Thank you for any help you may provide,
