In fact, thttpd depends on logrotate, which depends on mailx, which
depends on mail-transport-agent. If you had one supplying that
virtual package (even the microscopic "ssmtp") you'd have been fine;
exim just turns out to be the debian-wide default, installing ssmtp
instead would have satisfied it.

At the same time, note that those patches *should* have already gone
upstream, so finding them on the relevant upstream developers list
would have probably been faster.
