mtdblock driver to slow

Hello I'm using the mtdblock device driver for
a DOM and find it very slow especially to mount.
I am intrested in speeding this driver up. And would
like to know if any work has been done or if anyone
has
any information on what approaches I should be taking.
In our systems we will be moving between DOM/DOC
depending on costs so I really need this driver to be
"production" ready. Also I hacked the kernel to mount
this driver at boot is there any "standard" for kernel
command line parameters for mtd devices or can we make
the underlying block device a compile option for when
its not used as a module. I hacked the NFS driver to
mount root and use this device as a persistent cache
and a few other things so I feel comfortable working
on this I just want to make sure I'm not repeating any
work someone else is doing.

Thanks.

Mike
