I've been reading handhelds.org and still have a few questions I need to
answer before I decide to buy an Ipaq.
My main question I have is how usable is Linux on it? I need to be able
to depend on it for day to day real world use; the boring things like
phone/address book, todo list, etc. I would also like to use it for more
interesting things like Java development, mp3 playing, and wireless
networking.
I have seen some old posts to the mailing list by people who've had
problems running the Blackdown ARM port of the JDK. I didn't come across
anyone who had an answer for those people, so I'm wondering; does Java run
on this platform?
Is there an email client program available?
Has anyone gotten their Ipaq to work with their Qualcomm (now Kyocera)
QCP-860 phone for doing PPP? I had this working with my Palm IIIx. The
phone has a serial interface. Since the Ipaq 3765 has an optional serial
cable would I be able to use pppd to connect to the internet using my
phone? (I have this working on my Dell laptop running Linux.)
Intimate's home page says that the minimum requirement for storage is
140MB. What would be the realistic size needed for a system with the
standard PDA apps, Java runtime environment, and Perl? Would a 256MB CF
card be enough? Is it better to just get a microdrive? What are most
Intimate users using?
Is the battery life any better or worse than running WinCE and do Java
applications tend to be any worse about sucking juice than other apps
written in C?
Thanks in advance,
-M@

I just built a new system with familiar 0.5, and put
a microdrive on it, and did the intimate/reiser/install.
gcc didn't install. E.g,.
# apt-get install cpp gcc etc... fails (see below)
I think the problem is that somehow versions 2.95-4.8
are being sought but they do not exist. The debian.org
site has 4.9 versions. Can someone PLEASE tell me how
to get cpp/gcc installed, as a favor.
