I may have found something that helps.

echo file_readahead:2097151 > /proc/ide/hda/settings

this appears change the udrive behaviour while playing mp3s from constant
short activity to one large read at the beginning

it also appears that

echo 67 > /proc/sys/vm/bdflush

will wait until 67% of the buffers are dirty before writing them out. this
would seem to be a good idea ...
