Even then, e.g. mingle is way too big. I solved the font problem
with a ~/.gtkrc like this (not sure if this is correct):

style "gtk-default" {
       fontset = "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--9-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,\
                  -*-arial-medium-r-normal--9-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,\

}
class "GtkWidget" style "gtk-default"

but still the thing is too big.
