Found it, finally. First, I was stupidly trying to run a /etc/init.d/ppp
script which is wrong, of course.
Then, I had copied the /usr/sbin/pppd executable from familiar. There,
it was user dip, but intimate apparently expects tty. So I did a
chgrp to tty, and all was fine.
I don't really know why it was inventing that strange device name,
but I don't care now that it works.
