It looks like no application will launch, but X/Blackbox still respond to
user input (i.e. I can get the Blackbox menu to pop up, I just can't launch
any applications)

Having done a bit of reading up on journaling filesystems in general, and
ReiserFS in particular (and based on what you said above), it sounds like
its OK to reset the iPaq if I have to.
