Newbie install problems

Hi all. Congratulations on a superb job. I have some simple
questions that I hope won't take too long for someone to answer
(although I haven't a clue).

I have an iPAQ 3650 with 1 GB microdrive. I downloaded and
installed the current version of familiar 0.4 to the iPAQ. It
worked fine, including the window display and incoming ppp. I
then installed the current version of familiar (from about 11
PM last night to 4 AM this morning, 7/1).

The install went well except for 3 problems, of which 2 are of
any importance (the repeated offers to configure ssh2 when I
was running over an ssh connection weren't bad once I figured
out that I could keep saying no). The first problem was that
the file 2.4.3-rmk2-np1 wouldn't download because it "timed
out", even though all the other files downloaded fine (except
for one other one minor one, I think, but I wasn't logging the
exchange and I don't remember). The second problem was that
the final intimate boot install had an unterminated quote. I
elected to proceed anyway, and the machine boots, so hopefully
that's not a problem.

I found the following problems:

1) X won't work. Here's the boot-up messages over the serial
   terminal:
      Starting X...

      Unable to open /dev/h3600_ts
      /etc/rc2.d/S99x: xset: command not found
/etc/rc2.d/S99x: /etc/X11/Xdefaults: No such file or directory
      /etc/rc2.d/S99x: xrdb: command not found
      Touch screen not found.
      : No such device
xstroke: Could not open display :0

It may be pertinent that the following was logged earlier:

Loading modules: apm Note: /etc/modules.conf is more
        recent than /lib/modules/2.4.3-rmk2-np1/modules.dep
      modprobe: Can't locate module apm
h3600_ts Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than
        /lib/modules/2.4.3-rmk2-np1/modules.dep
      modprobe: Can't locate module h3600_ts
sa1100-rtc Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than
            /lib/modules/2.4.3-rmk2-np1/modules.dep
      modprobe: Can't locate module sa1100-rtc

During the initial install, the install script tried to
   load 2.4.3-rmk2-np1 but couldn't. Perhaps that's the
   underlying problem.

2) Incoming ppp won't work using the same scripts as with
familiar. Interestingly, incoming ppp is also broken when
the machine is booted into familiar (by removing the disk).

The messages on the host side are:

     Connecting to iPAQ with PPP...
     Serial connection established.
     Using interface ppp0
     Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
     LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
     Connection terminated.

When I connect to the serial port with minicom, I can see
binary stuff being emitted in a bursty way from the iPAQ,
which makes me think it's trying to connect but can't.

I compared the /etc/ppp/options files from before and after
the intimate install (I had saved the distribution version
from familiar because I modified it to add the defaultroute
option). The only difference was in the name of the serial
device. I changed it to /dev/tty0, which made no
difference. Since the iPAQ was able to communicate at all,
I figured that wasn't the problem anyway.

I'm not sure how to proceed. This is a beta version, after
all, and maybe it's just a matter of waiting for a week and
reinstalling intimate.

If there is anything I can do in the meantime, please let me
know.

Thanks! - Larry
