Jessica,

It looks like you did the right thing.
The data abort (DABT) makes me think that the bootldr is following a part of a string (53544265) instead of a pointer. Which version of bootldr is it? If you are not using bootldr 2.18.01 or newer, I would try that. Otherwise I'm rather puzzled. It sounds like you have installed multiple versions of 2.4.18-rmk3 kernels with the same results.
