OpenEmbedded is a system for cross-building individual packages and complete images for different devices entirely from source. It will even build tools for the compiling system automatically when necessary.

Familiar 0.8 and newer versions of OpenZaurus are based on OpenEmbedded.

Note: since 0.8.4, Familiar now uses its own forked version of OpenEmbedded (forked for stability) in order to build packages. More information and instructions on how to get started can be found on the Familiar Build Setup page. Although it isn't mentioned on the link, make sure you install curl too.
