HpIpaqSerialCable

Serial Cable for HP iPAQ h1900, h2200, h4100, h4300 and hx4700 series

Though no serial cable is supplied with the H22xx, H4xxx, or HX47xx series, you can also buy a dual USB/serial cable from HP! Its reference is FA122A#AC3 and it costs $25. It's the same cable for H22xx, H38xx, H39xx, H4xxx, HX47xx and H5xxx.

Caution: Though HP says this cable is compatible with the h19xx series, no traditional serial port is available in these models. "The iPAQ Pocket PC h1930 and h1940 connectors are compatible with previous h1900 models, however 22-pin does not support serial connection featured in other series (i.e. h3900/h3800/h3700/h3600 series) (from http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/en/en/pocketpc/faq_h1940.html).

You can also re-use a dual serial/usb cable from the cradle of some other iPAQ devices, which some of us already have. However, the H22xx, H4xxx, HX47xx will not fit in the cradle. So, you have to disassemble the cradle to access the connector. See [WWW]instructions.

You can even make your own cable by sacrifying your power charging cable and connecting the other end to a serial plug from an old serial modem, according our the [WWW]connector schematics (Attention: I measured the cabling myself and I belive pin S5 goes to pins C0, C1, C8 and C13 and not to pin C18 like described in the schematics). Some of us already did that successfully. WARNING: I'm 100% sure that opdenacker.org/pda/ipaq/connector/ipaq_connector.png connector schematics are wrong if you do that cable, you'll short PC TxD to ground! Soon I'll add right pinouts(I've made working cable. Kesfx)

If you don't want to sacrifice your power cable, you can even buy a [WWW]spare power adapter for less than $10 at your local PDA store. Then, with soldering equipment, make your own cable as described above. One of us already did that successfully. Further instructions can be found on HpIpaqPowerAdapterMod.

See our [What to do if you have no serial port] page if you have no serial port on your notebook.

Another option is to IrDA instead of a serial cable. See our HpIpaqH2200Plans page for details.

See HpIpaqPlugMod for detailed instructions how to modify the ipaq power plug (22 pin) to add serial port feature.

Last, but not least, is the idea of [WWW]modifying your USB cradle for serial functionality.
