all configs are smooth for me WRT pen -
mandrake 10.0
gentoo
linux 2.6.9, 2.6.12, 2.6.16
gnome, kde, xfce, ratpoison
X11R6, 7.0

The only thing - I switched to 'nv' driver, because 'nvidia' isn't
smoothe for me.

I didn't do anything unusual.
After 'make install' I copy the fpi2002.ko file to some /lib/..../serial
manually, but there's no more special that comes to my mind.

Is your com port providing proper values?
try checking output of attached com port, may be.
