I tried knoppix-3.8.1- with kernel 2.6.11, and was surprised to see that
it detected many things, including sound. (I can't remember if it
detected sound by itself, or I run detection process - but it was
extremenly easy, so I even did not notice)
I was not able to boot from external CD-ROM, so used HD-configuration...
PCMCIA was also detected good, and both network cards.
Video works good, and switching to X11 and to console is possible
(unlike some configurations when once you'll see X11 you'll never see
console until reboot)
The only problem with video - several times graphics display becames
whiter and whiter and then gets all white, and I am unable to switch to
console or do something useful, and computer still seen from network at
the same time.

I supposed to think that you need to try different versions of Knoppix,
Which version do you use??
