I'm not sure if it is gentoo or knoppix, maybe both, but for me it was
enough to add 'doscsi' or something like that to kernel at boot time.
The thing is that usb mass storage is in fact scsi driver so even if usb
is enabled the storage driver is not probed unless you also enable scsi.
