TC1000 pure gentoo install difficulties - mountain out of a molehill ?

Hi,

I have a TC1000 with Windows XP TabletPC that is non-functioning.
I have a desktop Windows PC that works fine (with a CDROM writer).
I also have a 1Gb USB memory stick.

Given that all I use the TC1000 for is to make notes each day using Journal
I have decided to use Linux to get more performance out of the TC1000
and explore the Linux alternatives to Microsoft Journal [where it is
difficult
to share the diagrams within my notes with colleagues] to find a better fit
with my needs.

I have downloaded Gentoo Linux but found that If I use a CDROM in
the docking station or use the USB memory stick to boot Gentoo
then the installation fails - it is unable to locate the installation media
having successfully started the installation process.
I have tried this with Knoppix v3.8.1 and Suse DVD v9.1 and the
same thing happens.

My current thoughts are to use the PXE boot from LAN with my other
PC being the DHCP and TFTP server that would transfer the Gentoo
media to the TC1000 that will not need the use of docking station cdrom
 or usb memory stick.

*AM I MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLEHILL ?
Have I missed something simple ?
*
I read a webpage where someone installed a Linux distribution onto
the working TC1000 that gave the ability to install to the Linux
partition. I have read other pages where people have kept windows
as a dual boot system. These are not appropriate for my case where I have
a non functioning Windows system and would like a pure Linux TC1000.

your thoughts please.
Jonathan.
