In my experience, this works only partially.
I did this by echoing 4 or 3 to /proc/acpi/sleep, as was described in
Linux HOWTOs. I did with kernel 2.6.9 and do not know about other
versions (may be newer versions have butter support?)

Full suspend (with all memory data written to disk) seems to work, but I
can't use keyboard (and mouse) after awake.
Partial suspend (when battery still used to keep RAM contents) does not
turns off backlight. So energy savings could be better.
AFAIR someone reported here it was possible to turn off backlight, but
this is probably isn't trivial to reproduce.

Please inform this list on your further findings.
