Sound out the headphone jack doesn't go through the final mixer stage
that the speakers does. Just turn down the main volume (in the mixer
controller of your choice), and you'll turn down the speakers, but not
the headphone jack. To turn that down, you'll have to turn down the
source levels (for example, PCM-2 seems to be the primary "noisemaker"
on my machine)
