ok, whats going on with sound?

I am trying to reinstall gentoo on my TC1000 seeing as how HP re-imaged my
HD, but now I cannot use alsamixer, and no sound cards are listed in
/proc/asound/cards, I have used the .config from the gentoo howto and the
kernel-2.6 from the same page, so it should work I got it working before,
but it chooses to be stubborn and gives me an output of "alsamixer: function
snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device" when I use alsamixer. Any
help here would be great.
