ALSA

Hi there,

Since I've installed the OS on my TC1000 (gentoo 2004.1 in case it
matters), I've got one remaining problem and that seems to be ALSA. The
PC has a VIA VT82C686 sound card and I'm using kernel 2.6.6 from the
gentoo development sources (following Tomasz's excellent howto posted on
this list). I'm fairly sure I remember having this working before, but
I could be wrong and it certainly isn't working now.

The annoying problem is that if I play an mp3 or whatever with xmms, it
works fine (ditto with mpg123), but if I use gstreamer or aplay, it
doesn't work at all. For example, if I use:

gst-launch-0.8 sinesrc ! alsasink

I get a single tone, but one that pulses rather than a continuous note.
If I use osssink instead of alsasink (I have alsa-oss installed), it
pulses at a faster rate. If I try to play an mp3 with gstreamer, I get
the first second-ish of the song over and over again. The main aim for
the keyboard-less computer is to have it running rhythmbox, which uses
gstreamer, so this is a bit limiting. (It also can be compiled against
Xine, but (a) the gentoo people have removed that from their ebuild and
(b) Xine doesn't work either so it's a bit irrelevant anyway).

Many thanks for any RTFMs (with specific FMs mentioned) that anyone can
offer!

Al
