Hi Ross,
Well, please let me add that I do not have a second machine already set up for PXE login, I just have the TC1000 and my Mac PowerBook, so getting Debian installed was no easy task at all.
I finally had to take the disk drive out of the TC1000 and install it into a computer at my work location (using a $30 adapter bought in frustration) in order to complete the installation, and then the "fun" started...of course the work machine did not have the right video card, ethernet card, modem or wireless card, not to mention the pen interface.
So, after all the effort, I could not run X Windows at all, and basically none of my peripherals worked. All that I had really accomplished was repartitioning my hard disk.
>From that point of view, having RedHat Linux 9 simply go ahead and install was a giant leap forward. It even repartitioned my disk for me, so I could have skipped all of the effort with Debian altogether. I now have a system that reuns RedHat Linux with their desktop environment, ethernet support, video support, USB support, all right from the start.
What does not work: power management, the pen, and wireless (because I do not have a wireless card). The power management is the most pressing issue, because the system does not shut down entirely, but ends up in a state of suspended animation. I have to wait until some time after the lights on the ethernet interface go out, and then manually use the power button to power down.
So, the bottom line is this: for someone who has few resources to draw on besides the TC1000 itself, RedHat Linux 9 is definitely the way to go.
Thanks for the opportunity to expand on my earlier message.
