Sorry about freaking out. Once I calmed down I searched the archive and
found that Ross had the same problem. I was able to fix it by
reconfiguring and recompiling my kernel. Unfortunately I changed too
many settings to isolate which one was the problem.
What I did do differently during this kernel configuration was focus on
turning off features I knew I didn't want, whereas before I was leaving
the defaults and just turning on features I wanted. I think that's what
fixed the problem.
