I bought a USB CD-ROM drive today so I could reinstall Windows XP and
play around with this. Ok, I'm feeling REALLY stupid for wasting that
money so don't make fun of me.
I posted my observations at:

My impression is that it's a lost cause and I'm giving up. The short
answer is yes, it would have been cool, but since it looks hard why
bother because we can boot from USB flash drives. I'm using a PNY
Attaché (http://www.pny.com/products/flash/attache.asp). I formatted
the whole thing with ext2 and used GRUB to boot Linux (LILO didn't
work).
