The nVidia binary driver doesn't support rotation. I submitted a
feature request to their Linux forum.
The KDrive server supports RandR, which is really cool, but it's too
slow for me.
The XFree86 nv server supports rotation, but won't change orientation on
the fly. I'm hoping that someday it will support RandR, but in the
meantime I've configured gdm to launch two X servers at the same time:
one configured in landscape mode and one configured for portrait mode
(using the -layout argument). To switch back and forth between the two
I just hit Ctrl+Alt+F7 or Ctrl+Alt+F8.
Having to log in twice is an inconvenience; however, I've encrypted my
whole hard drive using a key stored in a USB flash drive. Since I have
to insert the USB key (ignition key, heh heh) to start the computer
anyway, I've configured gdm to log me in automatically. For some reason
this works on only one of the two servers.
