Things like xstroke arn't a million miles away from doing this
kind of thing.

hmm, I havn't seen this ( I think I need to see if my tablet still
boots XP ;-) ). Im the author of matchbox[1] so its pretty easy for me
to hack these kind of features into that.

The Xfree kdrive ( aka tinyX ) servers do ( Vesa and Xfbdev ones at
least ) . Im not sure why they do fully support XRandR and 'big' X
servers dont. Though the problem is kdrive servers exist for most
cards except NVidia ones.

Id hope using the Xvesa and big X nv sources it wouldn't be too hard
to make a rotation capable kdrive nv server.

Aha right.

Its sounds like something similar would be easy to write in Gtk or
whatever. You wouldn't need the source to qemu, but just what bytes to
push to control the screen brightness. Can you already get key events
from the Q key ?
