Trying to get serial output

I have built a serial cable as someone on the list said: just
connecting the gnd, rx and tx to the correct pins (so strangely
without max232). I don't have much experience with serial cables and
their voltages, but I measured 6V coming out of the tx of the pda
(through the cable) while running vxhpc on the device. Is that
correct? It seems like a strange voltage to me (isn't the serial port
on the pc 10V or something?).
I tried connecting with hyperterminal, but without succes. Also no
serial ouput while running the kernel (I guess the kernel is running,
I just see the penguin fading to white, but it does a hard reset when
I press the reset button).

Does anybody know if usb networking should be working with the Yakumo
Delta 300 GPS (Mio 168)? I'm using the mtype of the Mio 336. Cause if
the serial cable is flaky, I'm not going to cut open another one,
maybe I'll desolder this one, but hten someone has to give me a
correct scheme.

Greetz,
JeDi
