"Connect script (ppp) failed"

I just installed Opie on my iPaq 3765, after having played with familiar and
Qtopia for some days each. I started the installation by going back to the
boot prompt and reinstalling task-bootserial.jffs2 ("load root"), and thus
erasing the previous installations. After establishing a serial connection
to the ipaq from my desktop machine, I installed from the net a number of
opie packages besides the task-opie.

After the installation all seems to work well on the ipaq, except that I can
no longer establish a ppp connection to it from my pc. Everything is set up
correctly (as per "How to set up a ppp connection to a handheld computer") on
both the ipaq and desktop. I have slhc, ppp_async and ppp_generic running on
the ipaq, and the same script and option file that worked before (and exactly
like the one given in the How-to). But every time I give the command "pppd
call ipaq" on the desktop pc, I get "Connect script failed". What would have
changed with an opie installation that would bar the ppp script? I never had
the problem with familiar or Qtopia. Any help would be much appreciated.
