QPE- not starting?

Listers:

I have completed a fresh install of familiar (still at 0.5.1) and wanted
to load the qpe environment without X. So I installed the basic qpe
packages as described at qpe.sourceforge.net. Everything seemed to go
fine. I am communicating with the ipaq and everything looks fine except
that when I start qpe, nothing happens on the ipaq display. These are
the messages:

sh-2.03# ./qpe start
You seem to already have a /root/Applications directory.
Assuming it is the QPE Applications directory. Exiting.
Starting QPE...
sh-2.03#

Then, nothing. Is there a log file or some other place I can look to
start to troubleshoot this problem? Anyone have any hints about what
might have gone wrong?

Note: I'm using serial communications only to the ipaq no ppp.
