Well I had elaborated this point a few times, but just in case:
OPIEs biggest drawback IMHO is its lack of flexibility when it comes to
foreign applications.
Think KDE: I can stick with the KDE apps but can also install and use
GNOME/X11 or whatever applications.
Think GNOME: vice versa

The point is: The existing OPIE applications are too limited in functionality
and there are too few people to care about them and bring them up to date.
That won't even change with OPIE II because the problem will strike again in
the future.

Thinking about ways to open up to a larger (and common) application pool will
lead to more flexibility and to success.
