Thanks for the feedback. I agree that there is a chance of fragmenting our efforts for Linux on handhelds between X apps and framebuffer apps, getting behind one windowing standard would help us all.
The PIM apps work except for a few rough edges. In regards to the OK/Cancel buttons, I added a 6 line hack to the libqpe that is in this feed that pops up a standard X OK/Cancel button to save edits for addressbook, datebook, etc. This works reasonably well for most of the apps, it needs to be fine tuned (i.e. it puts up the OK/Cancel button even if you have made no changes). Putting an OK/Cancel button in the titlebar is something I haven't looked into - any volunteers?

Subject: Re: [Opie] Feedback for QPE on X11
Tom,
I think your project is incredibly valuable, I hope that you are getting
good feedback on it.
I personally feel that QPE/X11 is really the best solution for opie and
handhelds.org in general I can only hope that others begin to feel the
same way.
There is a lot of great software for GTK/ X11/ TK/ wxWindows/
insertfavoritehere and it is a shame that those thousands of
applications are not able to be first class citizens alongside QPE.
I would be very willing to give up all the closed source applications of
QPE(with ZERO regrets) if I was able to use even 2 or 3 X11 Linux
applications.
I can understand the performance issues with X11 before the Compaq teams
work. Now the QPE framebuffer use really only serves to fragment the
Linux community.
I am in the midst of a large project right now so I can't really take
the time to muck (at least too much) about with my working handheld.
Have you been able to address the ok/cancel issues yet? Could I switch
to QPE/X11 on my zaurus reasonably well?
If the basic applications- contacts, todo, schedule, textedit work I would
be VERY happy to switch.

I wanted to get some feedback on the extent people are using it, its usability under X, etc.

The important thing to remember is that I made no code changes (only #ifdef's) to get the QPE apps running under X11, so extensive changes to QPE are not required for this to work. Before continuing on to the next step of smoothing some rough edges, I wanted to gauge people's interest in using and/or working on QPE/X.
