You bet it could.
Joe: If you actually choose to do that (I would!), you ought to do a little case study so you can say see, Company XYZ, Inc. did this and it produced these results...
I'm trying to think of a few examples off the top of my head....
Sun gets lots of attention for OpenOffice
Every time I boot I see the "Sponsered by MP3.com" tag because they sponsered ReiserFS (which I'm using).
Ditto for "Based upon Swansea University Computer Society NET3.039" because of the net modules
"3c59x: Donald Becker and others. www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html"
I'm tired and can't think of better examples at the moment but maybe others on the list or elsewhere can?
The NSA recived a fair bit of attention (not that they needed or wanted it ;-) for producing SE Linux
My brain is out of gear right now but I _know_ there's commercial companies that have sponsered good Free software projects.
Hey, Compaq is (was? boo-hoo) one of them.
Somebody who's thinking help me out here....
