calendar events sometimes wake up the Ipaq

When I enter an event into the calendar application the Ipaq will wake up
and sound its alarm sometimes, but most of the time it does not. In the
case where the alarm does not sound at the designated time it will beep
and display the reminder as soon as I turn the Ipaq on. I can't seem to
find what it is that makes the Ipaq wake up and sound its alarm for some
events, but not others.
  Is this a known problem? Any workarounds or fixes that will always make
events wake up the machine?
