for lost devices like the one Rik had:
check dmesg

for example:

dmesg | grep event

will show the devices of the event interface.

loox720:~# dmesg |grep input
drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.6:USB HID core driver
input: gpio-keys as /class/input/input0
input: pxa27x-keyboard as /class/input/input1
input: ts-adc as /class/input/input2
loox720:~#

ts-adc is the touchscreen
The console messages are really useful. they contain a lot of info about
hardware and drivers. it also can show what went wrong.
