We switched from using initrd+image to dedicated partition on SD
card, because it's easier to update, faster and doesn't cause
problems... When i recently tried to boot with an initial ramdisk
i had the same problems like You and it's probably related
to kernel configuration, but i didn't do any further investigations
on that. I just keep recommending dedicated partition for Linux
(and even more, ext3 partition).
