By now I have tried to compile a zImage from Piotr Czechowicz' source
and configuration, to go with the Opie image also posted by P.C. But
when I boot after a hard reset it hangs at the Opie welcome screen.
If someone has a known good image, a post would be appreciated...

UndCon has offered to update the .zip at http://undcon.com/pda/linux/,
that would of course be the best solution.
