I tried to build an image myself, but there's no kernel on the rootfs
that get created. Do you have any idea why?

There's a bug with the kernel:

It seems the CF slot doesn't work here with the Opie image: when I plug
a memory card or a bluetooth card, it is recognised but it can't be
used.

For example, I can't mount the memory card and when I try to eject it, I
get a oops:
